How to draft a paper: using your hands

Materials Needed: • Crayons or markers (if you’d like) • Two pieces of Computer paper per student • Your Hands • Utensil: pen or pencil • Great ideas Objective: Through this activity the students will understand how to organize their paper ahead of time from two different angles. Ways to use the activity: • To create and argument • To prep for a paper • To organize ideas • To separate positives and negatives • Study tool Agenda: my example topic is Taxes. We are going over Economics and how money is used in our class right now. • Goal: using our information we have gathered about our topic (taxes) we will be going over the positives from this topic and negatives in a way that will help you be able to right a 5 paragraph paper a lot easier. • The teacher will hand out the supplies needed (hopefully they already have their hands ready and ideas flowing [notice the hopefully before ideas]). • Using your 1st piece of paper and crayon/ marker please trace you left hand. • Using your 2nd piece of paper and crayon/ marker please trace you right hand. • Since we will be looking at the positives and negatives about taxes in the United States today please place a + sign above the left hand and a – sign above the right hand. We are using the old saying “Left is right and Right is wrong” today to help you remember. • Here is how we are going to break down each finger/ hand: o Thumb: instead of giving me a thumbs up, give me a heads up on your thumb. The thumb is going to tell me about the 3 things you are going to be talking about to support your point (+ or -) o Three middle fingers: not just that one you like to have slip up when I am not looking. Will tell me how you feel about the topic and show your support to your argument. The middle finger is known to make a bold statement, but today we will be using the middle three to support your statement. o Pinky: This is where you remind the reader what you talked about! The pinky is that last and final finger that sometimes gets forgotten (unless your sticking it out to be fancy while drinking something). So look at the pinky as the little last and final forgotten finger … just use it to remind people what you talked about it’s short like your thumb, so it’s basically going to make the same impact, but at the end of your paper. o Aka: the first paragraph opens you up -> the supporting three repeat the first one in a bigger way -> finally that little body guard pinky makes sure that everyone knows what the thumb was talking about.
