The Things They Carried (Vietnam)

Title: The Things They Carried (Vietnam) Objectives: The students will understand the effects of war from the people, places, and environment on soldiers by reviewing their accounts. Materials List: “The Things They Carried”, Teachers Notes, and Graphic Organizer. Assessment: Participation 50% and the Graphic Organizer 50%. Motivation: This activity will include a book that the students just finished in their English class. The integration will increase their understanding. This activity will be a great interpersonal and logistical activity. Game Plan: -The teachers will do a mini review of the book kind of as a summary to trigger memory. (15-20 mins) -The teachers will have the students break up into groups and do the graphic organizer on the different effects of the war through out the book. They will follow the instructions on filling out the organizer that are clearly stated at the top. (25-30 mins) -Next the teachers will guide the class in taking the graphic organizer and putting it up on the board. The teachers will guide the students in getting the most ideal conclusion of the effects. (20-30 mins) -The students will be able to ask any clarifying questions at the end to wrap up the book. (till the end of class) *The teachers may reference the teachers notes during this.
